Author : Dee PowerIf you’re thinking about how to get a book published you’ve probably wondered how the bestseller lists work There are several recognized national bestseller lists including: The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today

The New York Times bestseller list is compiled by polling hundreds of independent booksellers across the country The stores are selected because they are able, and willing, to do the reporting on hundreds of titles a week on a confidential basis Also included are about 40 wholesalers who provide books to non bookstore retailers such as airports, hotel and hospital gift shops, grocery stores, consumer co-ops, Target, WalMart, and so forth Regional and national chains are polled as well Specialty shops like children’s bookstores are not polled because it would bias the results Thousands of selling locations are included every week

The results are entered and a statistical model results which produces the nine lists, six adult and three children’s

A master file has a background description of each store If there are any anomalies, such as one book selling a huge amount of copies but only in that one store, the system flags the store for a re-interview to find out if there was any mistake This prevents an author, or his/her friends from buying several thousand copies in one city in an attempt to make the list artificially

The results are extrapolated based on their geographic location For example more books are bought in New York per person than in Phoenix, so the results of the New York store’s sales would be weighted more heavily than the Phoenix store

There is no magic number of sales that results in a ranking on the bestseller list It depends on the season It’s easier to make the hardcover list in summer than fall, because more titles are released in fall It depends on the competition If only one mega bestselling author’s book is released for that time period it’s easier If you have Nora Roberts, Stephen King, and Nicholas Sparks all competing for a spot, it’s more difficult IUniverse said that its title, If I Knew Then by Amy Fisher sold 34,000 copies and resulted in a number 14 spot on the list You could use that as a benchmark

What is important to understand is that only sales in retail locations that are polled count If your book sells, say, in churches, like The Purpose Driven Church, those sales don’t count toward the bestseller list It’s important to realize that the lists are compiled on a weekly basis Your title could sell 20,000 copies every week for a year and not make the list A John Grisham title can sell 250,000 copies in a week and snag the number one spot

Publishers Weekly, publishersweekly com, is a publishing industry publication devoted to trends, news, and book reviews Each issue has several bestseller lists: fiction and nonfiction hardcover bestseller lists, trade paperback and mass paperback bestseller lists They track the children’s bestsellers and on occasion, categories such as cookbooks, religion, or audio books PW surveys selected bookstores, both chain stores and independents, as well as other retail sites, and then uses a formula to weigh the responses and determine the bestsellers

The USA Today list is one list ranked by sales, regardless of whether the book is hard cover or mass market, fiction or nonfiction

Bookscan is not a bestseller list It is a retail sales tracking program and database Data is accumulated from the Point of Sale terminals in the participating retail locations for each book sold Borders and Walden, Barnes & Noble Inc , Barnes & Noble com, Deseret Book Company, Hastings, Books-A-Million, Tower Music and Books, Follett College stores, Buy com and Amazon com all participate as well as mass merchandisers like Target, Kmart and Costco and smaller retail chains, as well as hundreds of general independent bookstores The information tracked is available on a subscription basis

Because article marketing is so effective, many affiliate program owners/managers provide their affiliates with articles to submit to the various article directories on a regular basis The affiliates, of course, replace the links that accompany the articles with their own affiliate links for submission

Two caveats when using articles supplied by affiliate marketing managers - first, remember that most directories prefer you to have any links in your Author’s Resource Box only, not embedded within the article itself

Secondly, the articles as supplied are going to a number of affiliates unless you’re already a big enough name online that the affiliate manager is willing to have separate articles written just for your use So while few affiliates will actually take the time to use the articles effectively, either the merchant themselves or another affiliate has probably already submitted those articles to the directories, rendering them useless as they are for your affiliate marketing purposes

It takes much less time to rewrite an article than it does to research and write one from scratch, so don’t ignore the articles they offer - but DO take the time to rewrite each one before submitting it, hopefully adding some additional information or another tip as you do That little addition not only makes your article a little more unique, but it also makes the finished piece more valuable to the readers - and that’s exactly what you want when competing for attention at the article directories

Article marketing accomplishes many different things First, it can be used to establish yourself as an expert in the field that your topic relates to Next, it can be used to drive traffic to your website, and third, it can be used to actually promote the affiliate marketing product in question

However, one must be very careful when using articles to promote a product The article must not be a sales letter disguised as an article This won’t work Instead, write the article about the topic at hand, such as a problem that the product will help, or a desire that the product will fulfill, and then recommend the affiliate marketing product at the end of the article

Another way to promote affiliate products within an article is to make the article a review type article, where you compare three or four different products or services Of course, you will provide affiliate links for all of the products that you review, but you should be honest about how well each product or service addresses the problem or desire

If you do not write, and the affiliate program does not provide articles for your use, you should consider hiring a ghost writer Ghost writers are relatively inexpensive, and can turn out quality articles on a regular basis, which will include your affiliate links

Finally, you should write or have articles written for you consistently Ideally, you should have one article per week to submit to the article directories, and these articles should also be sent to related e-zines that accept submissions as well

Open a notepad and copy and paste the info you would like to write into your article there, that way you can save it easier and go back often to look at it Depending on your topic this process can be hard or easy It is also difficult sometimes not to want to sit and read all about the subject, but do not take the time to do this right now as you need to get busy writing

Let us move on to the actual writing of the article You will be given the four keys to writing articles Just take it step by step and you do not have to be a great writer to pull off an amazing article Your task is to get good information out there, and perhaps your style of writing will speak to people in a way that the same information delivered differently would not

Your article needs to be about 400 to 600 words and you should break up the article with little bullets of information It makes it more readable and less boring for the reader Now write as you would talk to the person you are trying to teach or sell something to

Middle

In this part you can add if it goes in naturally, your keywords The bulk of this part is to add interesting information, facts and ideas What ever you do,do NOT end your article here; give the reader reason to read on

Closing paragraph or conclusion

You can summarize the benefits of what you showed the reader and then let the information flow into the resource box which I where they will be able to click onto your website, which is the goal
